Blue Ridge is officially called the “Trout Capital of Georgia,” but it might as well be called the “Smile Capital of the South,” especially when summer is in the air. Believe us, we get it – summertime in Blue Ridge means outdoor adventures, one-of-a-kind shopping, innovative restaurants, and so much more. With so many happy faces in Blue Ridge, it’s no wonder why everyone and their mom poses for pictures around the city. After all, can you say that you visited Blue Ridge if you never snapped a selfie to share on social media?!
Smiles and selfies go together like peanut butter and jelly, and according to a study by Human Behavior and Emerging Technologies, they can actually make us happier. This is especially true today, where almost everyone has a miniature computer in their pocket, decked out with an HD camera and all sorts of cool filters. Whether you’re visiting Blue Ridge for summer vacation or you’re planning a relaxing retreat this May for Mental Health Awareness Month, scope out these perfect selfie spots before you hit the road!
Long Creek Falls
This beautiful, cascading waterfall located on the southern stretch of the Appalachian Trail is one of the most popular waterfalls to visit in Blue Ridge. The trail to access the falls is an easy path to follow, as you walk alongside Noontootla Creek through a lush valley full of verdant plant life and fragrant wildflowers. For a full day of outdoor exploration, pack a picnic lunch and continue your journey along the AT and get to know Mother Nature just a bit better.
The Blue Ridge Mural
The Blue Ridge Mural, located on the corner of Main Street and Mountain Street, is quickly becoming the go-to spot for selfies in Georgia’s most famous mountain town. This is a great location to take pictures if you’re already out and about in Downtown Blue Ridge, since the mural is just outside the downtown shopping district.
GMCR Pro Tip: Be careful while you’re taking selfies at this spot – Mountain Street can be very busy on weekends during summer months.
The Swinging Bridge
With the furious flow of the Toccoa River beneath your feet, the sights and sounds of excited kayakers, and the bright blue sky over your head, you might be too caught up in the moment to grab your camera. After you take some time to enjoy your surroundings, though, don’t forget to snap a selfie while you’re on the Swinging Bridge – the longest bridge of its kind east of the Mississippi. Before you leave, be sure to take a dip in the water and make some new camping or hiking friends.
GMCR Pro Tip: For a little bit of added fun, see if another bridge visitor will help you rock the bridge back and forth! You might experience an “oh, crap!” moment, but it’s totally worth it for the experience.
Nothing says “I did it for the Gram” like a shot of your excited face as you perch atop a dizzying zip line platform. With at least a half dozen zipline companies in Blue Ridge, you can get your adrenaline rush for the day and also get some great pics that you can share. Be sure to check with the zipline tour staff to make sure selfies are permitted before you start taking pictures. While we don’t suggest you take your selfie while you’re mid-air on the zipline, if you’re an experienced adventurer, it can be an incredible shot to capture.
GMCR Pro Tip: Having a friend, zipline professional, or even a stranger snap your picture can be a safer alternative to taking a selfie by yourself, at least in this situation. Safety before selfie!
